Child shot, killed by child on north side of Indy
Police officials said early Sunday a child was shot and killed by another child in an apartment on the north side of Indianapolis.

The incident happened at Oakbrook Park Apartments, which is near 80th Street and Harcourt Road.

Three children were at home with a relative who was babysitting them when one of the children found a gun and accidentally shot another child. The two children are relatives.

The 6-year-old who was shot in the head was transported to Riley Children’s Hospital in critical condition, but later died of his injuries.

IMPD Officer Chris Wilburn told 24-Hour News 8 this tragedy can be prevented.

“There are emotional scars that will be with this child for the rest of his life, his or her life. We cannot stress enough the importance enough of proper gun safety. Far too often we have these sorts of incidents and this is one of those things that we would want to prevent and they can be prevented. And we want to make sure that these types of tragedies don’t happen again,” said Wilburn.

Detective say a child under 10 located a gun inside the apartment and shot the gun killing the other child.

An exact case of death is pending an autopsy by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
