Tumbbad Sets Record as Highest-Grossing Re-Release in India in 14 Years

Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and featuring Sohum Shah, Tumbbad initially struggled in theaters but has experienced a remarkable resurgence.

After its second weekend, the film's re-release has garnered over ₹20 crore (₹200 million), bringing its total net collection to ₹33 crore (₹330 million). With strong performance continuing, it is projected to reach approximately ₹45 crore (₹450 million). The filmmakers are also considering a broader international release, which could further boost its success.

Originally, Tumbbad earned ₹12 crore during its initial 2018 run, so its current earnings have more than doubled, reflecting its enduring appeal. This revival has sparked anticipation for a sequel, likely to attract significant interest and investment.

Tumbbad now leads the list of top-grossing re-releases in India, having collected ₹26.5 crore in just 10 days, tying with the iconic Ghilli. Other notable films include Titanic with ₹18 crore, Sholay 3D at ₹13 crore, and Laila Majnu and Rockstar, both at ₹11.5 crore. Avatar rounds out the list with ₹10 crore.

Creatively guided by Anand Gandhi, Tumbbad blends horror and fantasy with stunning visual storytelling. Its success is especially noteworthy as it achieved these figures without being available on OTT platforms, highlighting the significance of experiencing classic films on the big screen.
