Deepika Padukone Breaks Silence, Slams Gender Bias in Bollywood
With these statements, Deepika not only addressed the speculation surrounding Kalki 2898 AD but also reignited a larger conversation about gender fairness and healthy workplace norms in Bollywood.

After weeks of speculation, Deepika Padukone has finally addressed the rumours surrounding her decision to step away from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit and the follow-up to Kalki 2898 AD. Reports had claimed that her insistence on an 8-hour work schedule caused her to exit both projects.
In a recent chat with CNBC TV18, the actress put things into perspective. “If being assertive as a woman is viewed as being difficult, so be it,” she remarked. “I won’t name anyone, but several male superstars have worked limited hours for years, and no one questions them.” Deepika noted that many leading men in the industry prefer Monday-to-Friday schedules and avoid working on weekends, yet such choices are rarely criticized.
During an event marking World Mental Health Day and celebrating a decade of her foundation, Live Love Laugh, Deepika spoke passionately about the lack of structure in Indian cinema. “Our industry runs in a very unorganized way. It’s high time we introduce proper systems and discipline,” she emphasized.
She also pointed out how women’s efforts often go unnoticed. “There are so many women, including new mothers, who manage 8-hour workdays efficiently, but their stories never make the news,” she said, stressing the importance of equality in professional standards.
When asked if standing up for balanced work conditions comes with its own challenges, Deepika responded, “This isn’t new to me. I’ve fought these battles quietly throughout my career. Sometimes they become public, but I always choose grace and composure.”
With these statements, Deepika not only addressed the speculation surrounding Kalki 2898 AD but also reignited a larger conversation about gender fairness and healthy workplace norms in Bollywood.
