The movie Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan's ex-wife, and produced under Aamir Khan's production banner, has achieved a rare honor. It has been officially selected for the 2025 Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category, representing India. Following this, Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and the film’s team have started their campaign for the Oscars abroad. The team is working hard to bring the film closer to international audiences. As part of this effort, they have recently changed the title of the film to Lost Ladies for the campaign and have released a new poster.
The film Laapataa Ladies, produced by Bollywood's Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan, is directed by his former wife Kiran Rao. Sparsh Shrivastav, famous for the web series Jamtara, plays the lead role, while Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishan appears in a crucial role. The film was released on March 1 and achieved a good box office performance. The movie has already won several prestigious awards. It was also showcased at the Supreme Court’s 75th anniversary celebrations.
The film's plot takes place in the year 2001. It follows the journey of two brides from a rural area who accidentally get separated during a train journey. The film delves into the consequences that follow this event.It highlights the way women’s freedom is restricted under the guise of societal customs and the suppression of their desires. The film conveys these serious themes while also entertaining the audience. Director Kiran Rao wanted to change the mindset that women are only meant to serve their in-laws after marriage and that they don’t have personal desires. The film focuses on raising awareness among rural women. It was featured at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival last year and also showcased at the Supreme Court’s 75th anniversary celebration. Laapataa Ladies won the Best Film award in the Critics’ section at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in Australia. Currently, the film is available on Netflix.
