Rishab Shetty's upcoming prequel, Kantara: Chapter 1, is facing backlash after residents in Karnataka accused the film crew of filming in protected forest areas and using explosives during production. The controversy escalated when a confrontation between the crew and villagers turned violent, injuring a local. Locals are calling for the shoot to be moved and for action against the crew.
Despite the issues, the film, which explores the origins of the Kantara saga, is set to release on October 2, 2025, with Shetty directing and starring alongside Jayaram and Jisshu Sengupta. Filming began in November 2023.
