Akaal Movie Faces Backlash in Punjab for Depicting Sikhs Disrespectfully
Gippy Grewal's film Akaal: The Unconquered, which debuted on April 10, has sparked controversy in Punjab. The movie, praised by critics, has been accused by Baba Bakshish Singh of disrespecting Sikhs. He claims the film portrays Sikhs in a negative light, depicting them as hairless, smoking, and drinking, which offended the community.
Baba Bakshish Singh threatened to block the movie’s release in Punjab, stating that such films undermine Sikh history. Following these accusations, Singh was reportedly arrested by the Punjab police.
Despite the controversy, Akaal earned Rs 85 lakhs on its opening day. The film, set in the 1840s, narrates the story of Sardar Akaal Singh and his village, showing their resilience against an attack after Maharaja Ranjeet Singh's death.
The film was made on a budget of Rs 15 crore and had a Punjabi-language release.
