Chennai,Tamil Nadu: Renowned Indian filmmaker Bharathiraja passed away on Wednesday at the age of 84 after battling age-related health issues. He had reportedly been undergoing treatment at his residence in Chennai for some time.

A celebrated figure in Indian cinema, Bharathiraja made a lasting impact as a director, actor, and producer. His passing has deeply saddened the film fraternity, with several cinema and political personalities expressing their condolences and paying tribute to his remarkable contributions to the industry.

Bharathiraja began his directorial journey in 1977 with the landmark film 16 Vayathinile, which earned widespread acclaim and established him as one of Indian cinema's most influential storytellers. Over the decades, he directed several notable films and played a significant role in shaping modern South Indian cinema.

In recognition of his contribution to the arts, Bharathiraja received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2004. His work also earned him multiple state and national honors, cementing his legacy as one of India's most respected filmmakers.

His funeral is scheduled to take place later today in Chennai.
