Fans Celebrate 11 Years Of Vijay's 'Thalaivaa' A Look At The Controversies Surrounding the Film

Vijay's 2013 release, 'Thalaivaa,' stands out as one of his most controversial films. As it marks its 11th anniversary today, fans are celebrating on social media. Here's a look at why 'Thalaivaa' stirred such controversy.

In 2011, Vijay's film 'Kaavalan' faced challenges but received support from J Jayalalitha, then opposition leader in Tamil Nadu, which facilitated its release. However, the release of 'Thalaivaa' in 2013 was fraught with issues. The film’s subtitle, 'Time To Lead,' created controversy after Jayalalitha became Chief Minister. Her administration demanded the removal of the subtitle and a special screening to ensure there were no political messages.

The filmmakers initially resisted these demands, resulting in a release ban in Tamil Nadu. 'Thalaivaa' premiered on August 9 in other states, with fans traveling to see it. The film was eventually released in Tamil Nadu on August 20 after the subtitle was removed and the special screening was conducted. Despite the challenges and piracy issues, 'Thalaivaa' performed well at the box office and became a memorable part of Vijay’s career, potentially influencing his later political ambitions.
