The release of Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, continues to remain uncertain following developments related to its censor certification. The Madras High Court has reserved its verdict after hearing arguments concerning the film’s certification, a move that is expected to further delay its theatrical release.
Directed by H Vinod, Jana Nayagan has generated significant anticipation among audiences. However, the film has been entangled in a legal dispute after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) challenged an earlier order directing the board to grant the film a U/A certificate.
The matter was heard by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Mahindra Mohan Srivastava and Justice G Satheesh, following an appeal by the CBFC against the decision of a single bench. Detailed arguments from both sides reportedly continued for nearly three hours during the hearing.
Representing the CBFC, Additional Solicitor General ARL Sundaresan submitted that the producers did not follow the board’s recommendation to refer the film back to the revision committee. He also contended that the earlier ruling was passed without fully considering the board’s objections.
On the other hand, senior advocate Satish Parasaran, appearing for the producers, argued that the CBFC altered its stand based on the opinion of a single member, despite a majority favouring certification. He further stated that the scenes cited by the board had already been removed and alleged that the film was being subjected to undue delay.
With the court reserving its verdict, the future release date of Jana Nayagan now hinges on the final judgment. Should the verdict favour the CBFC, the film may have to undergo another review by the revision committee, potentially pushing the release back by several weeks. Given the heightened expectations surrounding the film, particularly in the context of Vijay’s political entry, the delay has caused concern among fans.
