The movie Thalapathi is inspired by the Hindu mythological epic Mahabharata and highlights the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana. The plot follows Surya, an orphan raised in the slums known for his kindness, who becomes involved with a gangster named Deva. Their friendship faces challenges when an honorable district collector, who turns out to be Surya’s relative, arrives. The film revolves around Surya’s search for his true origins and the evolving bond between him and Deva.

In addition to Rajinikanth, the film stars Mammootty and Arvind Swamy, the latter making his film debut. The movie also features a supporting cast of actors like Jaishankar, Amrish Puri, Srividya, Bhanupriya, Shobana, and Geetha. Thalapathi was also notable for being the final collaboration between director Mani Ratnam and composer Ilaiyaraaja. Rajinikanth’s recent projects include Vettaiyan and he will next appear in Coolie, while Mani Ratnam is working on Thug Life, set for release in 2025.
