Ram Gopal Varma Sentenced to Jail in Cheque Bounce Case

Bollywood director Ram Gopal Varma has been sentenced to three months in jail by a Mumbai court in a cheque bounce case. This decision came just one day before the announcement of his new project "Syndicate." The case had been under trial for the past seven years, and on Tuesday, the Andheri Magistrate court made this ruling. However, Varma did not attend the court for the verdict, and due to his absence, a non-bailable warrant (NBW) was issued against him, directing the police station to arrest him. Varma was sentenced under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. The court has ordered him to pay a compensation of ₹372,219 to the complainant within three months. If he fails to pay the compensation, Varma will face another three months of ordinary jail time. This case dates back to 2018, and it was initiated by Mahesh Chandra Mishra through a company named Shri.

Varma, who is known for his successful films like "Satya," "Rangeela," "Company," and "Sarkar," has struggled to succeed in recent years. He faced financial difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic and was forced to sell his office due to the economic crisis. In this specific case, the court had granted Varma bail in June 2022 with a surety and a cash security of ₹5,000. The Magistrate, Y.P. Poojari, while announcing the punishment, stated that since the accused had spent more time in custody during the trial, no further questions would arise under Section 428 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973.

Recently, Ram Gopal Varma responded regarding this matter, stating that the case pertains to a former employee of his and a ₹238,000 case from seven years ago. He clarified that his lawyers are attending to the case, and since the matter is still in court, he cannot comment further.
