Legendary director Shyam Benegal, a Hyderabad-born filmmaker who won 18 National Awards and numerous accolades including Padma Shri and Dadasaheb Phalke Award, passed away at 90 due to health issues.

Shyam Benegal: Star director passes away, Hyderabad-born filmmaker who won 18 National Awards. Renowned director Shyam Benegal passed away this evening at the age of 90. He had been undergoing treatment at a hospital due to health issues for the past few days. His daughter, Pia Benegal, officially confirmed the news.
Born in Hyderabad, Shyam Benegal completed his education at Osmania University.Later, influenced by his relatives in Bollywood and his interest in films, he moved to Mumbai. He began his career as a writer and assistant director. Shyam Benegal directed numerous hit films, including Ankur, Nishant, Manthan, Bhumika, Sardari Begum, Zubeidaa, Mandi, Trikal, and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
In addition to films, Shyam Benegal also worked on numerous documentaries, short films, and television programs. Almost all his works received some recognition or awards, including 18 National Awards for his films. The state government honored him with the BN Reddy National Award. The central government awarded him the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, among other national and international accolades. This legendary director passed away today at a private hospital in Mumbai. Many film industry personalities and his admirers are paying tributes on social media.
