Annapurna Studios: A major technological breakthrough has been recorded in Indian cinema with the unveiling of the A&M Motion Capture Lab at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad. This cutting-edge facility signals a new phase in blending advanced visual technology with homegrown film production.
The A&M MoCap Lab is a joint venture between Nagarjuna Akkineni’s Annapurna Studios and Mihira Visual Labs, established by prominent producer Shobu Yarlagadda. Technical support and expertise for the lab have been delivered by Animatrik Film Design, an internationally reputed motion capture firm recognized for its contributions to Hollywood projects.
The facility was officially opened on February 20 by renowned director S. S. Rajamouli. At the inauguration, Rajamouli disclosed that important portions of his forthcoming film Varanasi, featuring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, have already been shot using motion capture technology.
Addressing the gathering, Rajamouli called the MoCap Lab a game-changing advancement for filmmakers in India. He pointed out that Indian productions had long relied on overseas studios for sophisticated visual effects and motion capture services. According to him, having such advanced infrastructure within the country will greatly improve creative freedom and streamline production processes.
Sharing similar views, Nagarjuna Akkineni described the launch as a landmark step in the growth of Indian cinema. He stated that access to world-class motion capture technology in Hyderabad would empower filmmakers to take on large-scale ventures, including grand adventure films and expansive science fiction projects.
The A&M MoCap Lab is anticipated to boost India’s standing in international filmmaking by facilitating premium visual storytelling and minimizing dependence on foreign technological facilities.
