Padmaavat to Re-Release in Theatres: Controversy and Box Office Success
The controversial Bollywood film Padmaavat is set to re-release in theatres on February 6, 2025, marking its seventh anniversary. Actor Ranveer Singh announced the re-release, inviting audiences.

The movie stirred significant controversy due to its historical portrayal and the depiction of women. Critics claimed it distorted history and misrepresented Queen Padmavati, a fictional character from the epic poem Padmavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The film faced violent protests across India, and political parties were divided in their opinions. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and lead actress Deepika Padukone faced threats, while the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) approved the film after renaming it to Padmaavat to emphasize its fictional nature.
Despite the changes, the film was banned in Malaysia due to its portrayal of a Muslim ruler in a negative light and accusations of misogyny. It was finally released on January 25, 2018.
The movie, starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Shahid Kapoor, was a major box office success, grossing ₹585 crore worldwide, with ₹400 crore from India and ₹185 crore from international markets. It is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
