Critics claimed it distorted history and misrepresented Queen Padmavati, a fictional character from the epic poem Padmavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and lead actress Deepika Padukone faced threats, while the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) approved the film after renaming it to Padmaavat to emphasize its fictional nature.

Despite the changes, the film was banned in Malaysia due to its portrayal of a Muslim ruler in a negative light and accusations of misogyny. It was finally released on January 25, 2018.
