UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made an important decision. He announced that the top trending mini-series “Adolescence” on the popular OTT platform Netflix will be screened in all schools across the UK. The creators of the series, Jake Thorne and Stephen Graham, were invited to Downing Street where discussions on child protection were held. The Prime Minister’s office mentioned that Starmer urged Netflix to take initiative to screen the series for free in all secondary schools in the UK. This move will give more children the opportunity to watch the series.
During this meeting, Starmer mentioned that it felt a bit awkward watching the series with his son and daughter. However, he believes that screening the series in all schools will help children learn about important issues such as the harmful effects of online content, healthy relationships with peers, and the importance of addressing misogyny. “The whole country is talking about 'Adolescence'. Not just this country, but globally as well. As a father, it isn’t easy watching this with my children. The series connects with the fears and anxieties that parents of adolescents experience. There is a big societal problem with misogyny, which is having a detrimental impact on society,” said Keir Starmer.
Jake Thorne, one of the creators of the series, mentioned that this is a great opportunity to bring 'Adolescence' to schools. He added that it will help teachers and students engage in more discussions on these topics. Furthermore, students will also get a chance to have their own discussions. Stephen Graham, who played the father in the series, pointed out that in the case of a murder, people often wonder, “How did the parents raise these kids?” However, he emphasized that schools, society, parents, and the people around them all share responsibility when a young person commits a crime. The mini-series, currently streaming on Netflix, has already garnered 66.3 million views and continues to trend at the top. The plot revolves around a girl named Katie (Emilia) who is brutally murdered in her school environment, with seven stab wounds on her body. The police arrest 13-year-old Jamie (Owen Cooper) under suspicion of the murder. They begin questioning him about whether he actually committed the murder, and if there is any strong reason behind it. The storyline revolves around whether the murder charge can be proven.
