The much-awaited prequel to Kantara, titled Kantara: Chapter 1, starring and directed by Kannada actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty, is finally gearing up for its OTT premiere.
The original Kantara, released in 2022, became a nationwide blockbuster and established Rishab Shetty as a celebrated filmmaker and actor. The film not only earned him the National Award for Best Actor but also received the Best Popular Wholesome Entertainer Award at the National Film Awards. Following that phenomenal success, fans have been eagerly anticipating its prequel, Kantara: Chapter 1.
Produced by Hombale Films, the prequel hit theatres worldwide on October 2, coinciding with the Dussehra festival. Continuing the legacy of its predecessor, the film recorded an impressive box office collection exceeding ₹850 crore across India. Now, less than a month after its theatrical release, it’s making a surprise move to digital streaming platforms sooner than anyone expected.
Storyline Overview
Kantara: Chapter 1 explores events that occurred before the Kadamba dynasty in the 8th century, taking audiences deeper into the mystical world introduced in the first film. The story unfolds after Shiva and his father vanish into the forest, tracing the lives of tribal people who coexist with divine powers hidden in the wilderness.
At the heart of the story is Berme (played by Rishab Shetty), a young man whose destiny intertwines with supernatural forces after an evil spirit descends upon the sacred rock of the deity. The narrative follows Berme’s spiritual awakening and his battle against dark powers guided by divine intervention.
Adding intensity to the plot, Prince Kulasekhar (Gulshan Devaiah) seeks to conquer the sacred rock for his kingdom’s expansion, igniting a fierce conflict between his army and the tribal community. Amidst this, Berme’s evolving relationship with Princess Kanavati (Rukmini Vasanth) adds emotional depth to the story.
Cinematic Highlights
While the film’s first half moves at a deliberate pace, the second half delivers gripping action and emotional drama. The interval and pre-climax sequences stand out as cinematic highlights. Backed by Ajaneesh Loknath’s powerful background score, stunning visuals, and grand production values, the film delivers a captivating experience. Though the emotional resonance may feel slightly less intense than the original, Kantara: Chapter 1 remains a strong and engaging prequel.
Even four weeks after its theatrical debut, the movie continues to draw packed houses across India, maintaining daily earnings of over ₹1 crore.
