A new film by an Indo Austrian director that focuses on the deportation of illegal immigrants.In Happy directed by Indian Austrian filmmaker Sandeep Kumar, he played an undocumented Indian immigrant facing deportation in Austria.

Happy from India, who has been living in Austria for over a decade, was denied asylum in Austria. He ignores deportation orders and stays in Vienna to look after his nine year old daughter Maya, who lives in a childrens home. According to an Austrian film website, he earns a living by working 24 hours a day as a newspaper vendor and delivery man.

In 2023, a large number of illegal immigrants were deported from Austria. The time has come. I had to tell the story. Made in collaboration with the Austrian Film Commission, the film is gearing up for a festival run after its theatrical release later this year.

I first approached a busy Mumbai actor for the lead role in Happy. He liked the script, but his other commitments prevented him from joining the project. Sahidur has done an amazing job, Kumar told PTI on the sidelines of the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
