Pirates of the Caribbean actor Tamayo Perry has died following a shark attack while surfing in Hawaii.

The 49-year-old was attacked on Sunday afternoon at Malaekahana Beach. Despite being a skilled lifeguard, Perry was pronounced dead by paramedics after being brought ashore by jet ski.

Perry appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and had roles in Lost, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Crush, and Charlie's Angels 2. He was also a professional surfer and instructor on Oahu.

Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety Chief Kurt Lager described Perry as "a lifeguard loved by all," and Mayor Rick Blangiardi called his death "a tragic loss," urging respect for Perry's family's privacy.
