Godzilla Minus One Review Best Godzilla Movie

When the movie Godzilla Minus One came on Netflix without much announcement or promo, it surprised many people including me.

This is the much-awaited Godzilla movie. Fans are expecting a theatrical release in India for this franchise which has a limited worldwide release.

But for now, you have to settle for the OTT version and be happy! And why is Godzilla Minus One so important in this franchise? And what separates this from the other Godzilla movies? Lets dive deeper!

Godzilla leads the pack when it comes to monster movies based on a creature. For years, Japanese filmmakers have been obsessed with this giant that destroys cities by sea and land. 

The recent Godzilla vs. Kong universe also took this possibility to a new level and introduced the possibility of radiation and its consequences. But Minus One is a different Godzilla movie.

This movie doesnt just want you to clap your hands and jump in your seats when the monster comes. The story revolves around the end of World War II, where a guilt-ridden pilot tries to give himself a second chance only to discover that there is no real escape from the demons of his past.

The story and writing are very poignant and at the same time create a world where we see many things that the Japanese common people experienced as a result of the war.

The film won the Best Visual Effects award at the Oscars 2024, and you can tell why. Makers are careful not to go overboard with pyrotechnics. When you see Godzilla for the first time, you are completely in awe of him.

His eyes and his movements feel more real and scary than before. Especially the fight scenes they do in the sea to stop the creature from coming to the shore are amazing. Takashi Yamakaji creates an almost perfect Godzilla film that does enough justice to the 1954 debut.

At a time when Western countries are relying heavily on VFX for storytelling, it is commendable that a filmmaker balances both in a creature film that turns the audience towards visual effects.

 If you havent seen any Godzilla movies before, this is an excellent introduction to its universe and if youre a kaiju fanatic, Minus One is the perfect antidote to your Godzilla withdrawal symptoms.

Godzilla Minus One deserves a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
