Kamal Haasan Moves Court Amid Kannada Row Over Thug Life
The controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan has intensified after his remarks on the Kannada language. His statement that "Kannada originated from Tamil" sparked outrage in Karnataka. As Kamal Haasan refused to retract his comments or apologize, the Kannada film industry decided not to release his movie Thug Life in Karnataka. The Karnataka Film Chamber imposed a ban on the film, further escalating the issue. Kamal clarified that he made the remarks out of love for Kannada, and he would only apologize if he made a mistake. He emphasized that love doesn't require apologies and claimed that many historians informed him about the linguistic history, denying any malicious intent.
To ensure the release of Thug Life, Kamal Haasan approached the Karnataka High Court. In his petition, he requested permission for the film’s release and sought protection. He named the state government, the Kannada Film Chamber, and several other organizations as respondents. The petition was filed by RKFI (Raaj Kamal Films International) in Karnataka. Kamal requested the court to instruct the DGP and City Police Commissioner to provide adequate security for the film’s screening.
However, the Film Chamber reiterated that Thug Life would be released in Karnataka only if Kamal Haasan apologized. The movie is scheduled for nationwide release on June 5, but its release in Karnataka remains uncertain. There is intense anticipation surrounding the court’s verdict on Kamal’s petition. Expectations are high for this film, as it marks the return of the Kamal Haasan–Mani Ratnam duo after nearly 35 years.
