Renowned Indian actor Mammootty has been conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award, recognising his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema and society over a career spanning more than five decades. Fondly known as Mammukka by his admirers, the honour stands as a tribute to his relentless dedication, versatility, and enduring impact across multiple film industries.
Having delivered memorable performances in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and English films, Mammootty has firmly established himself as a true pan-India star. Beyond cinema, he has consistently remained active in social service initiatives, earning widespread respect both on and off screen. The Padma Bhushan further adds to his illustrious legacy as one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated actors.
Born as Muhammad Kutty Ismail Panaparambil into a middle-class family, Mammootty completed his law degree from Ernakulam Law College and practised as a lawyer before turning to acting. He made his cinematic debut in 1971 with a small role in Anubhavangal Palichakal. After years of perseverance through minor roles and theatre, he rose to prominence as a leading actor with the 1980 film Mela.
Mammootty’s career is marked by several remarkable records. Between 1983 and 1986 alone, he appeared in nearly 120 films, an achievement unmatched in Malayalam cinema. He also holds the distinction of portraying double roles 15 times. Despite acting in over 450 films, he continues to select bold and innovative narratives, most recently earning international acclaim for his performance in Kaathal – The Core. The Padma Bhushan stands as another milestone in a career that continues to inspire generations.
