Jyothika Opens Up About Facing Gender Discrimination Even After Marrying Suriya

Jyothika Opens Up About Facing Gender Discrimination

Actress Jyothika needs no special introduction, as she has gained fame in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi films. She delivered super hits in Telugu with movies like Mass, Tagore, and Shock. After falling in love with Tamil star Suriya, she married him and moved to Chennai. After nearly 26 years, she made a comeback in the film industry. She received praise for her performances in Srikanth alongside Rajkummar Rao and Shaitaan. Her latest web series, Dabba Cartel, where she plays a key role, will premiere on Netflix from February 28. As part of the promotions, Jyothika shared her experiences about facing gender discrimination.

Jyothika spoke about casual sexism, saying it has become a regular occurrence in society. She explained that even after marrying Suriya, she continues to face gender discrimination. She shared an example: If she says in an interview that she is lucky to have married Suriya, people praise Suriya as a great man. But if Suriya says he is happy to have married her, people again praise him, saying he is a good husband who thinks about his wife. In this entire scenario, her identity gets overlooked because society tends to perceive it that way.

She also pointed out that gender bias exists even in material possessions. She said that even when she buys a car or another item, people assume someone else has to check its features, as there is a belief that women are not good decision-makers. Sometimes, this mindset reaches a level where it creates an identity crisis. She shared that such biases are deeply ingrained in society, affecting women's self-worth and recognition.
