Madras High Court Rejects Petition to Ban Movie Reviews for First 3 Days After Release

Madras High Court Rejects Petition to Ban Movie Reviews

The Madras High Court has rejected the petition regarding movie reviews, filed by the Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA). They had argued that YouTube channels and some netizens giving review-based opinions before the movies' official releases are influencing movie outcomes. As part of the effort to stop such reviews, TFAPA had condemned personal attacks and hate speeches being propagated under the guise of movie reviews, sharing a detailed message with the public.

In an attempt to control social media trolling targeting big movies, TFAPA had filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court. They sought a ban on movie reviews for the initial three days following a film's release and called for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, along with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, to establish guidelines for online film critics. However, the bench, led by Justice S. Souther, dismissed the petition in today’s hearing.

The producers had earlier pointed out that reviews had impacted the success of several films released this year. Notable films like Indian 2, Vettiyan, and Kanguva were particularly affected by public discussions and reviews on YouTube channels. To address this growing issue, all industry associations are urged to work together, and theater owners are advised against allowing YouTube channels inside movie theaters. TFAPA has issued a warning against personal criticisms of actors, directors, and producers under the guise of movie reviews, stressing that such actions will no longer be tolerated.
