Chennai: The upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections have gained significant attention as actor-turned-politician Vijay prepares to contest from two constituencies. Following a path taken by several film stars in Indian politics, Vijay is stepping into the electoral arena with his party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).
The elections, scheduled for April 23, are expected to witness a competitive battle among major political parties, including the DMK and AIADMK, along with Vijay’s TVK. His decision to contest from both Perambur and Trichy East constituencies has sparked widespread discussion.
The trend of film personalities entering politics is well established in India. Legendary figures such as N. T. Rama Rao, Chiranjeevi, and Pawan Kalyan have previously launched political parties and contested elections, often from multiple seats.
NTR, founder of the Telugu Desam Party, famously contested from multiple constituencies and secured victories, setting a precedent for such strategies. Similarly, Chiranjeevi contested from two seats in 2009, winning one, while Pawan Kalyan faced defeat in both constituencies during the 2019 elections.
Tamil Nadu itself has witnessed similar instances. Former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa contested from two constituencies in 1991 and emerged victorious in both.
Against this backdrop, Vijay’s dual-constituency strategy has raised expectations and curiosity among voters and political observers. As this marks his first electoral contest, the outcome will be closely watched to determine whether he can replicate the success of predecessors like NTR or face challenges similar to others.
With growing anticipation, the Tamil Nadu electorate now awaits the results to see how Vijay’s political journey unfolds.
