Moana 2 Movie Review: Stunning Visuals Fail to Anchor a Weak Plot
Eight years after the original Moana, the beloved characters return in a sequel that, while visually spectacular, struggles to offer fresh storytelling. The film follows the familiar arc of Moana teaming up with Maui to defeat a villain and save civilization, but the narrative feels repetitive, relying on predictable beats and recycled themes from the first movie. Moana once again questions her purpose, with her grandmother’s spirit offering guidance, and Maui’s song lifting her spirits at key moments.
The sequel, however, shines with breathtaking visuals and world-building. The new character Simea, Moana’s younger sister, is a charming addition, and the vivid, mystical settings—from the Kokamora pirates to the dark, bat-filled lair of the antagonist—help immerse viewers in a mesmerizing journey. The film also features dynamic sound design, like the rhythmic tapping of coconuts for the pirates' language and the use of Maori chants that enrich the cultural experience.
Though Moana 2 doesn’t break new ground in terms of plot, it continues the franchise’s celebration of strong female representation, highlighting Moana’s leadership in a male-dominated world. While the story might be adrift, the film’s visual and cultural depth still makes it a worthwhile watch.
