Microsoft Windows Outage Blue Screen Issue Linked To CrowdStrike Update

Issue Overview: Many users are experiencing a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on Windows 10 globally. Critical locations such as banks and airports are also affected. This problem is linked to a recent update from CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company known for its advanced security solutions using cloud-based AI and machine learning.

CrowdStrike Issue: CrowdStrike’s recent update appears to have caused this BSOD problem. The company has confirmed the issue but has not provided detailed explanations or a permanent fix yet. Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and is working on a solution.

Expert Insight: Omer Grossman, CIO at CyberArk, described this as a significant cyber issue in 2024, affecting global business processes. The problem likely arises from insufficient quality control in the CrowdStrike update, which may have inadvertently activated a "doomsday command" or "kill switch."

Temporary Fix: CrowdStrike has provided a manual workaround:

  1. Boot Windows into Safe Mode.
  2. Navigate to  C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike.
  3. Locate and delete the “C-00000291*.sys” file.
  4. Restart Windows normally.

This solution is temporary, and a permanent fix is anticipated soon from CrowdStrike and Microsoft.
