India Becomes Second Biggest Source of Tourists to the US
India has emerged as the second largest overseas source market for tourism to the United States, reflecting a strong resurgence in international travel after the pandemic. The announcement was made by Fred Dixon, Chief Executive Officer of Brand USA, during Brand USA Travel Week held in Bengaluru.
Following the COVID-19 slowdown, international travel has regained significant momentum, with outbound tourism from India to the United States witnessing remarkable growth. Compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, Indian tourist arrivals to the US have increased by nearly 40 percent. In 2025 alone, close to two million Indians travelled to the United States, marking the second consecutive year in which tourist numbers crossed the 20-lakh milestone. This growth has propelled India to the second position among overseas tourism markets, contributing substantial revenue to the US economy.
Indian travelers are no longer limiting their visits to traditional destinations such as New York, California, or Florida. Repeat visitors are increasingly exploring lesser-known cities and emerging destinations across the country. Indians now feature among the top ten source markets for tourism in several US destinations and rank within the top five in select regions. With longer stays and higher spending on premium travel experiences, Indian tourists have become a key driver of growth for the American tourism industry.
The year 2026 is expected to be a landmark for US tourism, with several global events scheduled to take place. The FIFA World Cup, the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, and celebrations marking the historic Route 66 anniversary are all expected to draw large international crowds. A significant increase in tourist arrivals from India is anticipated, prompting the US government to consider special measures for Indian travelers, including efforts to streamline visa processes.
Looking ahead, Fred Dixon expressed confidence that this upward trend will continue, supported by upcoming mega events such as the Los Angeles Olympics, the Rugby World Cup in 2031, and the Winter Olympics in 2034. Alongside leisure travel, business visits and higher education enrolments are also rising steadily. Recognizing this sustained growth and high-value spending, the US tourism authorities are now describing India as a “golden market” for the future of American tourism.
