Delhi Ganesh, Iconic Tamil Actor, Dies at 80
Veteran Tamil actor Delhi Ganesh, known for his comedic and supporting roles, passed away on Saturday at the age of 80. His son, Mahadevan, confirmed the news on Instagram, stating that Ganesh died at his Ramapuram residence due to age-related health issues.
Born on August 1, 1944, in Tirunelveli, Ganesh began his career in theatre with the Delhi-based Dakshina Bharata Nataka Sabha. He also served in the Indian Air Force from 1964 to 1974 before transitioning to films. His film debut came with K. Balachander's Pattina Pravesam (1976).
Ganesh is remembered for his roles in films like Sindhu Bhairavi (1985), Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990), Avvai Shanmugi (1996), and Thenali (2001), among others. He also portrayed a lead role in Engamma Maharani (1981) and played villains in Apoorva Sagotharargal (1989) and Chidambara Ragasiyam (1985).
He won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for his role in Pasi (1979) and was honored with the Kalaimamani title by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in 1994. Ganesh's final appearance was in Indian 2 (2024).
