Neelakantha Movie Review: Master Mahendran Shines in Emotional Village Sports Drama
Neelakantha movie review: Master Mahendran delivers a sincere performance in this village-based drama featuring love, politics, and kabaddi sport

Directed by Rakesh Madhavan, Neelakantha features Neha Pathan, Yashna Muthuluri, and Sneha Ullal in prominent roles, with Master Mahendran leading the cast. The film is produced by Marlapalli Srinivasulu and Venugopal Island, and presented by Rajarajeshwari. It was released today, January 2. Here is a detailed review of the film.
Story Overview
The story unfolds in a village called Saraswathipuram. The village head, Raghavayya (Ranki), is known for delivering harsh punishments to anyone he believes has committed a wrongdoing. Neelakantha (Master Mahendran), the son of Nagabhushanam (Kancharapalem Raju), becomes a victim of this rigid system while studying in the tenth standard. Although he is not guilty, Raghavayya orders that Neelakantha must not leave the village for the next 15 years.
Because of this restriction, Neelakantha is unable to represent his village in mandal-level kabaddi competitions. As a result, Saraswathipuram continues to suffer repeated defeats in these tournaments.
During his school days, Neelakantha falls in love with Sita (Yashna Muthuluri), the daughter of the village sarpanch Prithvi. She leaves the village to pursue higher education and returns after 15 years. Upon learning about their past relationship, Sita’s father decides to arrange her marriage to someone else.
Neelakantha steps in to stop the marriage. The sarpanch then places a condition before Sita: she can marry Neelakantha only if he wins the sarpanch election. Labeled as a thief by society, can Neelakantha rise above the accusations and win the post? How does he lead Saraswathipuram to victory in kabaddi after years of failure? What mistake did he never commit, and how does he fulfill the promise he made to his mother? These questions form the heart of the film.
Analysis
The film follows a familiar village-based narrative where strict rules and moral codes dominate daily life. An innocent man is punished for an offense he never committed, and eventually, he works for the welfare of the same community that wronged him. Similar themes have appeared in several Telugu films, including Pedarayudu. However, Neelakantha introduces a fresh twist. Instead of being banished from the village, the protagonist is forced to remain within it, which adds an interesting layer to the conflict.
Director Rakesh Madhavan presents the story using a non-linear screenplay, moving back and forth in time. This approach successfully builds curiosity and keeps the audience engaged about what will happen next.
The first half focuses on Neelakantha’s emotional struggles and his love story, ending with a suspenseful interval. The second half adopts a more serious tone, with well-executed action sequences. The kabaddi scenes are effectively filmed and add energy to the narrative. The final 25 minutes are engaging and clearly communicate the core message of the film. While the director succeeds in conveying his intended point, the storyline could have been strengthened further, and the screenplay needed tighter execution in certain portions.
Performances and Technical Aspects
Master Mahendran, who previously gained recognition as a child artist, makes a confident transition into a lead role. He delivers a convincing performance in both emotional and action-driven scenes. Yashna Muthuluri fits well into the role of Sita and performs with sincerity. Sneha Ullal brings elegance to her role, and it is pleasant to see Ranki return to the screen after a long gap. The supporting cast also delivers solid performances.
On the technical front, the film is well made. Mark Prashant’s background score stands out as a major strength and enhances the emotional depth of the scenes. The songs have a classic feel. Editing is satisfactory, cinematography is visually appealing, and the production quality matches the scale of the film.
