Nuwan Thushara IPL NOC controversy and apology
Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Thushara has issued an apology to the Board of Control for Cricket in India after withdrawing his legal case concerning the Indian Premier League (IPL) no-objection certificate (NOC) dispute.
Thushara had earlier approached the court against Sri Lanka Cricket, alleging that the board failed to provide him with the mandatory NOC required to participate in the IPL. However, he has now officially withdrawn the complaint and expressed regret over the situation.
In an email addressed to the BCCI, Thushara apologised for any inconvenience caused by his legal action. He stated that his intention was to seek fairness and transparency, adding that he remains committed to cooperating with the cricketing authorities going forward.
The pacer had raised concerns over the lack of clarity in SLC’s decision-making process. At the same time, he acknowledged that the dispute may have created unnecessary disruption and sought to resolve matters amicably.
The issue arose after Sri Lanka Cricket introduced stricter regulations, including a mandatory fitness test for players seeking to participate in overseas leagues such as the IPL. Thushara, aged 31, reportedly did not meet the required fitness standards, which led to the denial of his NOC.
Despite the setback, this latest development is expected to ease uncertainty surrounding Thushara’s professional future. The withdrawal of the case and his apology could improve his chances of reintegration into the national setup.
Thushara made his IPL debut with Mumbai Indians in 2024 and has been associated with Royal Challengers Bengaluru since the following season.
