Asthma First Aid
On World Asthma Day 2025, experts highlight the urgency of prompt action during asthma attacks. Dr. Shivanshu Raj Goyal from Max Hospital explains six lifesaving steps using the acronym A-S-T-H-M-A:
- A – Assessment: Check for chest tightness, wheezing, shortness of breath, or trouble speaking—signs of an asthma attack.
- S – Sit Upright: Ensure the person is upright to ease breathing; lying down worsens symptoms.
- T – Treat: Use the 4x4x4 method—4 puffs of a rescue inhaler, wait 4 minutes, repeat if needed. Use a nebulizer if no inhaler is available.
- H – Help: If symptoms don't improve or worsen, call for emergency medical help immediately.
- M – Monitor: Stay with the person, watch for any symptom changes, and be ready to act quickly.
- A – All OK / Act Further: Even if symptoms ease, consult a pulmonologist soon. If no relief, seek hospital admission.
Quick recognition and response can prevent serious complications and save lives.
