Australia: Australian tennis great Mal Anderson has passed away at the age of 91 due to health-related issues. He breathed his last at his residence on Monday, leaving the tennis world in mourning.
Mal Anderson etched his name into tennis history by becoming the first unseeded Australian player to win the US Open singles title. His remarkable journey began on a clay court in an agricultural field before he rose to become one of Australia’s most respected tennis icons.
Anderson captured the US championship in 1957 and also secured three doubles titles during his illustrious career. Apart from his Grand Slam success, he played a key role in Australia’s Davis Cup triumphs and won the prestigious title twice.
Following his retirement, Anderson dedicated his time to mentoring young Australian tennis players. Among those he guided was former world No.1 Pat Rafter.
