Badminton Asia Championships: Ayush Shetty into QF Sindhu, Prannoy exit

Ayush Shetty during quarterfinal run at Badminton Asia Championships 2026

Rising Indian shuttler Ayush Shetty continued his impressive run at the Badminton Asia Championships, advancing to the quarterfinals with a dominant straight-games victory on April 9. Meanwhile, India’s top contenders, PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy, exited the tournament following second-round defeats.

Ayush Shetty, the reigning U.S. Open 2025 champion, delivered a composed performance against Chinese Taipei’s Chin Yu Jen, securing a 21-16, 21-12 win in just 41 minutes. Building on his strong opening-round victory over world No. 7 and fifth seed Li Shi Feng of China (21-13, 21-16), Ayush has emerged as one of India’s standout performers in the tournament.

He is set to face Indonesia’s third seed Jonatan Christie in the quarterfinal, where he will aim to continue his momentum.

In contrast, experienced campaigners PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy were unable to progress further. Prannoy, who had earlier defeated Nguyen Hai Dang in straight games, went down 12-21, 19-21 to Hong Kong’s Weng Hong Yang in the second round.

In women’s singles, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu suffered a straight-game defeat to second seed and two-time Asian champion Wang Zhi Yi of China. Sindhu had shown resilience in her opening match, overcoming Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching in a three-game contest.

India also faced disappointment in mixed doubles, where Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila lost to the fourth-seeded Malaysian pair of Toh Ee Wei and Chang Ten Jie, 13-21, 14-21.

Elsewhere, young Indian shuttler Unnati Hooda, who stunned world No. 11 Supanida Katethong in the opening round, is scheduled to face Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki next.

In women’s doubles, Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra will take on the formidable Japanese duo of Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto for a place in the quarterfinals.
