Tata Motors to Introduce Petrol Variants of Harrier and Safari After Sierra Launch — Check Details
Mumbai, Maharastra, India: Tata Motors is preparing to launch petrol-powered versions of its popular SUVs — the Harrier and Safari — on December 9, 2025, shortly after unveiling the Sierra. This marks a major step in the company’s effort to expand its premium SUV lineup beyond diesel powertrains.
New Turbo-Petrol Engine for Tata SUVs
Both the Harrier and Safari will be equipped with Tata’s brand-new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. The engine, developed under the company’s in-house ‘Hyperion’ family, was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2023 and will make its production debut in the Tata Sierra on November 25, 2025.
This new motor is expected to deliver around 170 bhp of power and 250–280 Nm of torque, making it one of the strongest petrol engines in its category. With these numbers, the SUVs will directly rival turbo-petrol models like the MG Hector, Jeep Compass, Hyundai Alcazar, and Mahindra XUV700.
Tata Motors is likely to offer both manual and automatic transmission options, though the exact gearbox details have not yet been revealed.
Developed over a span of five years, the 1.5 T-GDI engine highlights Tata’s push toward advanced and refined powertrains. It combines turbocharging and direct fuel injection for enhanced performance, fuel efficiency, and lower emissions.
Petrol Option Expands Tata’s SUV Lineup
Until now, the Harrier and Safari were sold only with a 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine producing 168 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. With shifting market preferences and tightening diesel norms in major cities, Tata is introducing petrol options to reach a wider range of buyers — especially urban consumers who prefer smoother and low-maintenance petrol engines.
Expected Pricing and Market Position
The petrol variants are expected to be priced slightly lower than their diesel versions. Currently, the Harrier is priced between ₹14 lakh and ₹25.25 lakh, while the Safari ranges from ₹14.66 lakh to ₹25.96 lakh (ex-showroom). The upcoming petrol versions could start below ₹14 lakh for the Harrier and around ₹15 lakh for the Safari, improving Tata’s value proposition against petrol-dominant rivals.
Strategic Product Rollout
Launching the Harrier and Safari petrol versions soon after the Sierra allows Tata Motors to maintain consistency across its premium SUV lineup, all powered by the same new-generation Hyperion engine.
This move isn’t just a mechanical upgrade — it’s a strategic decision aimed at expanding Tata’s market presence and ensuring long-term adaptability amid changing automotive trends. The petrol Harrier and Safari will retain the ruggedness and high-end features of their diesel siblings, with added refinement and accessibility.
If successful, this launch could significantly boost Tata’s standing in India’s midsize SUV segment and mark the beginning of a new era for the brand’s internal combustion portfolio.
