Safety Alert for Indian Students in the US Amid Rising Immigration Checks
St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA: A large number of students from India and several other countries travel to the United States each year to pursue higher education. Many students holding F-1 visas take up part-time employment to manage their living expenses. However, under US immigration regulations, working beyond the permitted hours or engaging in off-campus employment without authorization is strictly prohibited. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has repeatedly warned that violations of these rules could result in detention and deportation.
Following the return of Donald Trump to power, immigration enforcement activities have reportedly intensified across several states. In the past year, thousands of individuals were arrested and deported, including Indian nationals who had entered or stayed in the country illegally. Statements from political leaders and increased discussions on social media have also indicated a rise in anti-immigrant sentiment, leading to concerns within the Indian community.
Amid these developments, immigration experts are urging Indian students to exercise extreme caution and strictly comply with visa regulations. Students have been strongly advised to avoid any form of unauthorized employment, as even minor violations could result in serious legal consequences.
In a recent incident, two Indian students were arrested by ICE officials while working at an Indian restaurant in St. Louis Park. In another reported case, an employee of a leading IT company was taken into custody directly from the workplace. Despite presenting valid documents and explaining their status, the individuals were reportedly detained for several hours under harsh conditions before being removed from the premises.
These incidents have raised fresh concerns among Indian students in the United States, prompting renewed calls for awareness and strict adherence to immigration laws.
