NRI Bhaskar Reddy’s Arrest Sparks Controversy Over Police Actions
Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India: NRI Malapati Bhaskar Reddy and his brother Obul Reddy were taken for a medical examination at the Vijayawada Government Hospital before being presented in court. Witnesses reported that Bhaskar Reddy was unable to walk when brought before the magistrate. He alleged that he was physically assaulted by the police during custody.
Authorities have reportedly filed another case against Bhaskar Reddy, linked to his social media activity. Sources claim that he was pressured to admit to posting false information online and that he faced threats and intimidation while in police custody.
Critics allege that the coalition government is misusing its power to target Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who express political opinions online. It is being claimed that the administration is harassing NRIs who show support for the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
According to available information, Bhaskar Reddy, who owns a supermarket in London, hails from Chodavaram village in Penamaluru Mandal, located in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. He returned to his hometown earlier this month after traveling from London.
Shortly after his arrival, he visited Kamineni Hospital in Tadigadapa for a routine medical check-up. During that visit, police officers in plain clothes reportedly detained him and his brother without disclosing any reason for the arrest. Family members were not informed of his whereabouts, leading to growing concern among locals.
The Penamaluru Police have been criticized for their lack of transparency and negligent response to questions about the arrest. Both brothers were later taken to the Vijayawada Government Hospital for examination before being produced in court.
