ndonesia Earthquake 7.4 Magnitude Near Molucca
Jakarta-Ternate: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Molucca in Indonesia early Thursday morning, prompting temporary tsunami warnings that were later withdrawn after careful assessment.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at approximately 6:48 AM local time. The epicenter was located around 120 kilometers northwest of Ternate in North Maluku province, at a depth of 35 kilometers beneath the seabed.
The tremors, lasting between 10 to 20 seconds, were strongly felt across North Maluku and North Sulawesi, causing widespread panic as residents rushed outdoors for safety.
Authorities confirmed that a 70-year-old woman lost her life after a structure collapsed in Manado. Several individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. Minor structural damage was reported in parts of Ternate and Bitung, affecting homes, churches, and other buildings.
Officials also recorded nearly 50 aftershocks following the main quake, adding to concerns among residents.
Within 30 minutes of the earthquake, small tsunami waves measuring approximately 75 centimeters in North Minahasa and 20 centimeters in Bitung were observed. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), based in Hawaii, initially issued alerts for coastal regions of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
However, following further analysis, authorities lifted the tsunami warnings within two hours, stating that the threat had subsided.
Indonesia’s location along the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it highly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity. The latest seismic event has reignited concerns among residents, recalling past disasters such as the devastating 2004 tsunami.
