Washington, District of Columbia,USA: Indian American public policy professional Rini Sampath has entered the race for Mayor of Washington, DC, positioning herself as a representative of a new generation of leadership focused on governance reforms and improved civic services.

Sampath, 31, formally announced her candidacy in the Democratic primary on February 18 and has raised nearly $30,000 within the first two weeks of her campaign. A native of Tamil Nadu, India, she has spent the past decade in the US capital and describes Washington, DC as her “chosen home.”

Speaking about her motivation to contest the election, Sampath emphasized the need for generational change in city leadership. She stated that the existing slate of candidates did not reflect the fresh perspective and accountability she believes residents deserve.

A key pillar of her campaign is improving the efficiency of 911 and 311 response systems. Referring to challenges faced by residents during a recent snowstorm, she characterized the situation as a significant governance failure. Sampath has pledged to digitize and modernize the 311 system, including the development of a more reliable and accessible application to enhance citizen experience.

In addition to municipal service reforms, Sampath has highlighted public safety and trust in law enforcement as central priorities. Drawing on her experience as a federal government contractor, she advocates for operational efficiency, stronger recruitment practices, and incorporating private-sector best practices into public administration.

She also underscored the importance of revitalizing workplace culture within City Hall, stating that effective governance requires both talent retention and the strategic recruitment of skilled professionals.

Addressing the District’s political status, Sampath reiterated her support for Washington, DC statehood while expressing willingness to engage in bipartisan dialogue to advance residents’ interests.

Her campaign strategy is described as data-driven, with a focus on clearly articulated policy plans rather than broad promises. Sampath maintains that measurable results and transparent governance will be central to her leadership approach if elected.
