Indian athletes continue to make headlines across the global sports arena. In the current year alone, India has secured World Cup titles in multiple disciplines. A new sport has now joined that list: roll ball. Although the game is still unfamiliar to many, Indian players have proven their dominance. Both the men’s and women’s squads captured the World Cup crowns in roll ball. In the tournament final, the Indian men’s team edged past Kenya with a close 3–2 victory to seal the Roll Ball World Cup title.

What is Roll Ball?

Roll ball is a modern sport that originated in India. Simply explained, it blends elements of basketball, handball, and roller skating. Players compete while wearing roller skates, maneuvering the ball across the rink to score in the opponent’s goal.

Each team is made up of 12 members, though only six players are allowed on the playing surface at any given time, including a goalkeeper. Athletes carry the ball while skating, dribbling in a style similar to basketball. Passing can be done using either one or both hands, but scoring a goal requires the use of only one hand. The team that nets the highest number of goals within the scheduled time period is declared the winner.

Though it began in India, roll ball has rapidly expanded worldwide and is now played in more than 50 countries.
