IFA 2024: Lenovo's Auto Twist AI PC: Revolutionary Concept or Gimmick?

Lenovo's Auto Twist AI PC

At IFA 2024, Lenovo unveiled a futuristic concept laptop that looks impressive but may not be the most practical. The latest device, named the Auto Twist AI PC, is a concept model featuring a motorized hinge that responds to voice commands, allowing the display to automatically rotate based on the user’s movements.

“Lenovo proudly introduces the Lenovo Auto Twist AI PC proof of concept, an innovative leap in personal computing designed to enhance user interaction through intelligent automation and AI,” Lenovo announced.

The standout feature of this laptop is its motorized hinge, enabling it to switch between various modes—closed, laptop mode, and tablet mode—by following simple voice commands. It takes about 10-15 seconds for the device to fully transform. Although the delay might be seen as inconvenient, the feature proves useful in scenarios like multitasking or adjusting during video calls.

A notable feature is its "follow-me" functionality, which uses facial recognition to rotate the screen so it always faces the user. This ensures that users remain in the frame during video calls or presentations, a significant upgrade from Apple’s Center Stage feature on iPads.

For context, Apple's Center Stage adjusts the iPad’s front camera to keep users in the frame as they move. Lenovo takes this further by incorporating the automatic screen rotation. Additionally, the laptop’s smart lid will automatically close when left unattended.

Despite the innovation, the device's real-world practicality is still up for debate. Voice-activated transformations and screen rotations based on facial recognition seem exciting, but they may only be useful in specific settings, like video conferencing or presentations. The motorized features could be viewed as more of a novelty, particularly given the slight delay in execution.

If Lenovo can refine the mechanics to improve speed and fluidity, the Auto Twist AI PC could potentially redefine laptop interaction. The technical specifications of the concept are still unknown, as it remains a prototype at this stage.
