WhatsApp Unveils Voicemail-Style Missed Call Notes, Animated Images, and Several New Tools

Users will now be able to transform any photo into a short animated clip within WhatsApp using AI-based prompts and instructions.

Meta has reportedly enhanced the overall performance of its image-generation technology.

WhatsApp rolled out a range of upgrades on Thursday, just in time for the holiday period. The Meta-owned messaging service has introduced a new Missed Call Messages option, which acts as a modern alternative to traditional voicemail, allowing users to stay connected more conveniently. Meta AI’s image-creation features have also been refined, adding support for turning still images into brief videos and improving the overall output quality.

What’s New on WhatsApp

The Missed Call Messages feature lets users leave a quick voice or video note whenever the person they’re trying to call doesn’t pick up. Depending on the type of call, they can instantly record their message and send it with a single tap. According to WhatsApp’s blog, this updated method could eventually replace old-style voicemail entirely.

During voice chats, users can now express themselves with new reactions—such as a ‘cheers!’ animation—without disturbing the ongoing conversation. Additionally, in video calls, WhatsApp will now highlight and prioritise whoever is speaking.

Beyond these tools, Meta AI’s image-generation system within WhatsApp has been upgraded. It now supports advanced models from Flux and Midjourney, providing significantly better results for creating visuals like festive greeting images during the holiday season.

The platform is also introducing the ability to animate images. Users can convert any picture into a brief video by giving Meta AI specific prompts or instructions. On the desktop app, a redesigned media tab is now available, making it easier to locate files, links, and media shared across different chats. Link preview designs have also been polished for a cleaner look.

In addition, WhatsApp is expanding its Status features. People can now include music lyrics, interactive stickers, or question prompts that others can directly respond to. Questions are also coming to Channels, enabling admins to interact more deeply with their followers and gather instant feedback.
