Mumbai: A tragic incident has cast a shadow over the ongoing IPL 2026, as a British broadcast engineer was found dead in his hotel room in Mumbai.
The deceased, identified as John William Langford, aged 76, was a seasoned broadcast professional from England. He had been staying at a hotel in Mumbai since March 24 in connection with his work for the tournament.
Langford was part of the technical crew for the IPL 2026 match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders held on March 29. After completing his assignment, he returned to his hotel room later that night.
The following morning, hotel staff became concerned after receiving no response from him. Using a spare key, they entered the room and found Langford lying unconscious on the floor. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Officials from the Marine Drive police station have registered a case and initiated an investigation. According to preliminary findings, no suspicious elements were observed in the postmortem report.
Langford had an extensive career in broadcast engineering and was working as a freelance vision supervisor for ZOOM Communications during IPL 2026. His experience included contributions to several major global sporting events, including the Women’s Premier League, the 2024 Paris Olympics, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He had also been associated with multiple Cricket World Cups across India, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies between 1996 and 2011.
The Mumbai Indians versus Kolkata Knight Riders fixture turned out to be his final professional assignment. In the match, Mumbai Indians secured victory with notable performances from Rohit Sharma, who scored 78 runs, and Ryan Rickelton, who added 81.
