Assam's New Aadhaar Rule: NRC Number Required from Oct 1

Assam introduces new Aadhaar issuance rules for fresh applicants

New Aadhaar rule in Assam,Guwahati: The Assam government has announced a new policy requiring NRC application numbers for issuing Aadhaar cards, effective October 1. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that this measure aims to curb illegal migration, as there have been concerns about Aadhaar applications exceeding the state's population, suggesting involvement by suspected individuals.

Under the new guidelines, individuals must provide their NRC application receipt number to obtain an Aadhaar card. The state will issue new Aadhaar cards to 9.55 lakh people whose biometric data were previously locked, without requiring them to re-register. Tea-growing areas are exempt from this new requirement.

Himanta Sarma also highlighted the rise in illegal migration from Bangladesh and emphasized enhanced border surveillance and coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) and other agencies. The decision to enforce this policy was made at the state's discretion, following the Centre's allowance for state governments to determine Aadhaar issuance procedures.
