At least 17 people have died in Meghalaya due to heavy rainfall
GUWAHATI/DHAKA: Heavy rainfall in Meghalaya has caused floods and landslides, resulting in at least 15 deaths over the past four days. The India Meteorological Department forecasts more rain this week, with “isolated heavy rainfall” expected.
Among the victims are seven members of one family in South Garo Hills, two individuals swept away in a vehicle, and a man killed by a falling tree. The death toll rose to 17 after two children drowned in a water-filled pit while playing.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will visit affected areas on October 8 to meet families of the deceased and inspect relief camps. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is actively distributing relief materials in the region, which has faced continuous rain since October 4.
