Avalanche Alert Issued for Uttarakhand and Neighboring Regions
The northern states of India are witnessing heavy snowfall while the southern region is experiencing extreme heat. Continuous snowfall in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir has led to frequent avalanches. In Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, eight people lost their lives last week due to a snow slide. Now, authorities have issued avalanche warnings for areas above 3,000 meters in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh districts, predicting a high risk of snow landslides in the next 24 hours.
An Orange Alert has been issued for Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh districts, while an Yellow Alert has been issued for Uttarkashi. Neighboring Himachal Pradesh's Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, and Kinnaur districts are also under an Orange Alert. Additionally, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh’s Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, Rajouri, and Poonch districts have been placed under an Yellow Alert for possible snow-related hazards.
On March 1, a major avalanche struck Mana village in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. The snow landslide hit a Border Roads Organization (BRO) workers' camp, where around 60 people were present. Authorities quickly launched rescue operations, saving several workers and airlifting them to the Joshimath Army Hospital. Unfortunately, eight people lost their lives in this tragic incident.
