BJP MLA Accused of Gangrape
Bengaluru: Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna has been named in a shocking FIR after a 40-year-old woman accused him of gangraping her, urinating on her face, and injecting her with a harmful substance. The Bengaluru police registered the case on May 21 at the RMC Yard police station, following the woman’s detailed complaint.
According to the FIR, the incident occurred on June 11, 2023, at Munirathna’s office in Mathikere. The woman, who identifies herself as a BJP worker, alleged that the MLA’s aides lured her to the location under the pretext of helping her with legal issues allegedly instigated by the MLA himself. Once inside, she claims Munirathna and two of his associates stripped and assaulted her, threatened to kill her son, and then ordered his aides to rape her. She further alleged that Munirathna urinated on her face and later injected her with an unknown substance, handed to him by a fourth unidentified man.
She said she was hospitalised in January 2024 and diagnosed with an incurable virus, which she believes resulted from the injection. The complaint was filed after she reportedly attempted suicide on May 19.
Police have registered the FIR under multiple IPC sections, including 376D (gangrape), 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection), 323, 354, 504, 506, 509, and 34. Three associates of the MLA have been named, while the identity of the fourth accused remains unknown.
This case adds to Munirathna’s growing legal troubles. He is also facing a corruption probe after the Karnataka Assembly Speaker granted permission for further investigation into bribery charges. The MLA is accused of demanding Rs 36 lakh and accepting Rs 20 lakh in connection with a contract, with the case registered under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, at the Vyalikaval police station in Malleshwaram.
Notably, this is the second rape FIR filed against Munirathna. In September 2024, another 40-year-old woman alleged repeated sexual assault between 2020 and 2022 and accused him of coercing her into honey-trapping politicians using HIV-infected women. That FIR was registered at Kaggalipura police station and named six additional individuals.
Police investigations are ongoing in both cases.
