India Census 2027 : The Central Government has introduced significant changes to the upcoming Census 2027 framework, marking a progressive shift in the definition of family structures in India.

As per the latest announcement, the Census exercise, scheduled to commence from April 1, 2027, will recognise cohabiting couples as a single family unit. This includes individuals who have been living together for an extended period, regardless of formal marital status.

The decision aims to bring inclusivity to the census process by acknowledging evolving social dynamics and modern living arrangements. By granting family status to such couples, the government seeks to ensure better representation of diverse household structures in official data.

This move is being seen as a step towards recognising long-term partnerships, including same-sex couples, within the framework of national data collection, although broader legal recognition remains a subject of ongoing discussion.
