The debate over delimitation and the proposed increase in Lok Sabha seats has emerged as a major political flashpoint in India, intensifying tensions between the Centre and several southern states.

The Union government has defended the delimitation process, asserting that it aims to ensure fair and adequate representation across all regions. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju dismissed concerns that southern states would be disadvantaged due to their success in population control, calling such claims “misleading” and politically motivated. He maintained that every state, including those in the South, would ultimately benefit from the proposed changes.

However, opposition leaders have strongly criticized the Centre’s stance. Congress MP Manickam Tagore accused the government of downplaying serious concerns, remarking that labeling such a sensitive issue as “luck” undermines the genuine fears of southern states. He warned that increasing parliamentary seats purely on the basis of population could reduce the political influence of more developed regions in the South.

The issue has also drawn sharp reactions from state leadership. Revanth Reddy has formally written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to convene an all-party meeting to build consensus before proceeding further. He emphasized that any such exercise must reflect national agreement rather than unilateral decision-making.

Meanwhile, M. K. Stalin has issued a stern warning, stating that Tamil Nadu would witness widespread protests if delimitation disproportionately favors northern states. He reiterated that the interests of southern states must be safeguarded in any future electoral restructuring.

As the debate escalates, delimitation is rapidly becoming one of the most contentious political issues, with significant implications for India’s federal balance and democratic representation.
