Punjab Police Evicts Farmers from Shambhu and Khanauri Protest Sites
Farmers protesting at the Shambhu (Shambhu-Ambala) and Khanauri (Sangrur-Jind) border points, which have been occupied since February 13 last year after their march to Delhi was blocked, have been evicted by Punjab Police.
On March 20, 2025, following the eviction at Shambhu, Haryana security forces began removing cement barricades that had been set up to stop the farmers from traveling to Delhi. Security at the Shambhu border remains tight.
Several farmer leaders, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on an indefinite fast, and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarvan Singh Pandher, have been detained by the police. In response, Rakesh Tikait, national spokesperson for the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), condemned the Punjab government's actions.
The seventh round of talks between farmer leaders and a central delegation concluded on March 19, 2025, with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announcing the next meeting on May 4.
