Former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren Dies At 81

Shibu Soren Passes Away After Prolonged Illness

Shibu Soren, JMM founder and former Jharkhand Chief Minister, died at 81 in Delhi on August 4, 2025, after a prolonged illness. His condition deteriorated after a stroke and kidney complications left him dependent on life support.

Known as ‘Dishom Guru’, Soren fought against exploitative moneylending and led the movement for a separate Jharkhand. He co-founded JMM in 1972 and led it for decades, with his son Hemant Soren succeeding him in 2025.

He served three short terms as CM and was a seven-time MP from Dumka. In 2004, he briefly held the position of Coal Minister, shaping early policies during a critical phase of energy sector reforms. Though convicted in a 1994 murder case, he was later acquitted. He is survived by his wife Rupi, sons Hemant and Basant, and daughter Anjali.
